Insider Secret #3: Premade Kits are Bad
Pre-made Food Storage Kits Don’t Cut It
Don’t get caught buying a “1-year waste of money” you can’t or won’t use. Food storage secrets like this make me mad. There are many pre-made packages out there. We have a few ourselves, but more important is that you get only what you need. You see…these pre-made kits are assembled as marketing tools. “Buy our kit and be prepared right now” is the mantra. It sounds similar to a lot of investment advice, “Invest in our program and watch your money….” But what they didn’t say is “.. and watch your 401K die a horrible death.
Any company you work with should work in concert with your needs so you can determine which foods and what quantities are right for you. They should offer a Home Food Storage Analysis™ or Food Storage Analysis™ before making any suggestions so they know your specific needs. Then they should help you put together your food storage your way so you can actually use it everyday.
Pre-made kits aren’t useless. They just aren’t tailored for your needs.
Insider Secrets #4: Packaging
The Wrong Packaging Costs You More.
#10 cans, Superpails, Food Grade Buckets, Mylar® bags and more are huge food storage secrets. Which ones are right for you? As you can see, there are all types of packaging. Most dealers will have all types of packaging available, but some will only specialize in one or two; usually the most profitable ones.
Only get the packaging that is suitable for your area and need. What is suitable? Well that depends upon a number of factors such as types of food, humidity, insects, rodents, and more. Nothing like extra protein (bugs and rodents) in your food storage.
If your home is relatively insect and rodent free and has low humidity, buckets or bags may be enough. There is talk that rodents will eat through food grade plastic buckets, but as for M.D. Crawford of The Survivalist Blog, he indicates not having this problem.
Some indicate that using oxygen absorbers will make it so seeds will not sprout. According to Angela at Adventures in Self Reliance, sprouting works just fine. You can see her Sprouted Wheat Experiment for more details.
So … pick the packaging that is right for you and not necessarily the most profitable for the business. It will save you money in the long run and can help your food storage last a long time.
